This does not replace 112. It is advisory satellite information: delays and unconfirmed detections are possible. If you see fire or smoke, call 112.

How to know if a wildfire is getting close to your house in Alicante

A large wildfire does not burn evenly, and knowing there is fire «in the province» does not tell you whether to worry. What you need is different: how many kilometres away the nearest hotspot is from your place, in which direction, how hard it is burning in that particular spot, and whether it is spreading towards you.

  1. Open the map and mark the place that matters to you: your house, your village or your parents' home.
  2. Choose the alert radius. If you are in woodland, leave a generous margin.
  3. Turn on alerts: a phone notification, or by email if you would rather not install anything.

No sign-up needed, and your coordinates never leave your phone.

What to do if there is fire nearby

  1. Follow the authorities. If they order an evacuation, leave immediately and do not go back for things.
  2. Get the essentials ready before you need them: documents, medication, water and a charged phone.
  3. If dense smoke arrives, go inside, close doors and windows and switch off ventilation.
  4. Warn neighbours, especially older people or anyone living alone.
  5. Call 112 if you see flames or smoke that do not appear to be attended to already.

Where this data comes from

From NASA's VIIRS (375 m pixel) and MODIS (1 km) satellites, which detect the heat of wildfires several times a day, and from official emergency services when they publish open data. Each square on the map is a real satellite pixel: the colour shows the intensity of that specific area, and squares with a recent signal look brighter than those that already burned.

Two limits worth knowing. A 375 m square cannot resolve streets or houses: a marked square does not mean everything inside it burned. And no dots does not mean the fire is out, because the satellites only pass a few times a day.
